At the end of March Johanna and Jonas Sandefeldt and their 12-year-old daughter, here named Lina, fell ill in what they suspect was covid-19. When they were analyzed seven weeks later, no such infection could be detected. They have also not had measurable antibodies. However, doctors have determined that his symptoms are due to a probable Covid-19 infection.
Johanna Sandefeldt and her daughter were accompanied throughout the course of the disease during the spring. They had no fever or cough, but extreme chills, shortness of breath, and fatigue.
In June, Lina began to feel better. and was able to gradually return to school. At the end of the same month, the following setback came: Lina had to go to the hospital in an emergency for what turned out to be myocarditis, which the parents were told could be related to the covid-19 infection, as well as other viral infections.
It was in late March that 12-year-old Lina fell ill. In June, he began to feel better. But the same month he had myocarditis. Since then, she continues to feel bad.

Three months later, her heart had healed, but Lina is still not well. Johanna Sandefeldt says that some days her daughter has to struggle to move from room to room.
– It is very sad to see your son like this and time is running out. I miss his effervescent wit, his quick comments, the sparkle in my eyes.

Lina had suffered from depression before, but felt better some time before the illness. In addition to mild asthma, she is completely healthy.

– Since I have pediatric infection care within my area of responsibility, I responded that we are eager to understand and follow up on this. I suggested that we call on this group of children to try to get a more unified picture.

Subsequently, together with, among others, pediatric rheumatologists, cardiologists, neurologists and physiotherapists, psychologists and counselors, a structured plan has been developed to carry out a first investigation of the more than 20 children.
– Hopefully we can design research guidelines and possible treatment that can be extended to other units. These children are certainly found in all parts of the country.
The plan is also to apply ethical permission to conduct a pilot project study. First, however, the group wants to ensure that children receive the care they need.
– On the one hand, you want to understand what effects the coronavirus has in a slightly longer term, what organ systems are affected in that case, but also if it has an impact on cognitive and psychological functions, such as concentration, memory , anxiety, anxiety and sleep.
Malin Ryd Rinder says that it is not crucial to determine whether the children’s symptoms have arisen as a result of a COVID-19 infection or not, but that the cases in which it is possible to ensure a connection are interesting.
– We also hope that this can provide support to investigate and support these types of patients in primary care units.
Jonas F Ludvigsson is a pediatrician at Örebro and professor of clinical epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet. He has recently published a case report with five children who have been ill for at least two months after a suspected covid-19 infection. None of them have tested positive for ongoing infection or antibodies, but Jonas F. Ludvigsson still says he is certain that most cases may be related to the new virus.
– The children had the typical covid-19 disease and the same course and symptoms as adults, he says.

Lina is one of just over 20 children with long-term symptoms after a suspected covid infection who will be treated in a project at Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s Hospital.

The children she came to know about, both the five in the case report and 20 others through an online survey they took before a seminar, were almost all between the ages of seven and 16. Jonas F Ludvigsson says it seems less common for really young children to be affected. Of the people she has been in contact with, the majority have also been girls.
Children who get sick long after a suspected covid-19 infection is an unexplored field, says Jonas F. Ludvigsson. Basically no studies have been done in other countries.
Although the phenomenon has so far been relatively unknown, Jonas F Ludvigsson does not believe that the number of blacks is large.
– This is probably not very common in children, but for affected parents and children, of course, it is a disaster.
Lina is one of the children to be examined at the Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital as part of the pilot project. Johanna Sandefeldt, who is also ill in the suites with a probable covid infection, is looking forward to help.
– Naturally, we wonder what it is that makes it so bad and we want to know if there could be something else behind it. But above all, we want to know if we can do something, anything, to make her feel better.
