Susan Rice defends role in Benghazi’s response amid contests, dismisses possible criticism as ‘distraction’

Former national security adviser Susan Rice dismissed possible criticism of how she handled Benghazi, saying it would be a Republican-led distraction if former Vice President Joe Biden chose her as his running mate for 2020.

She was responding to “The View” co-host Joy Behar, who had asked her about the Republican rejection.

“If you were the vice president, Republicans would come after you for the way you handled the aftermath of the attacks in Benghazi. Now you received a lot of criticism at the time for showing what turned out to be inaccurate information about what happened,” he said.

“Will this hurt your chances? How are you going to deal with it? You know they’ll chase you with Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi. What are you going to do?”

Rice responded by stating that “none of” the eight congressional committees that investigated Benghazi determined that she “had done something wrong.”

“None of them discovered that they had deliberately misled the American people, but I have no doubt that the Republicans will use this, and attack whoever Joe Biden’s election to be their vice president is. But let’s be honest about what this is. This is dishonest, and it’s a distraction, “Rice said.

As evidence, Rice pointed to another terrorist attack that she said had not been investigated.

“Just to demonstrate how dishonest he is, let’s recall the fact that three members of the US service were killed in a terrorist attack in the past year, on US soil, at a military base in Pensacola by Saudi apprentices, who had been inspired for Al Qaeda, “she said.

“This happened under the supervision of Donald Trump. Neither an investigation, not a single accountability process, nor outrage. Four Americans, Joy, were killed in West Africa in the country of Niger. These were four members of the US service killed by Al Qaeda in the Donald Trump case see. Was there an investigation, was there outrage, was there responsibility? No, “he added, apparently referring to Republican members of Congress.

“The same in East Africa, where Al Qaeda, under the supervision of Donald Trump, attacked the US military bases. So, this is not on the level. This is intended to attack, distract and divert. And the main thing Joy, it is that they are trying to distract us, whether they are attacking me or someone else, it is the horrible reality that, under the supervision of Donald Trump, 150,000 Americans have died from coronavirus. Thirty million have almost no work , and our children cannot safely return to school. That is the horror we are facing now. “

The FBI investigated the Pensacola incident while the Niger attack was investigated by the Defense Department. While those incidents were the subject of congressional scrutiny, they did not involve investigations at the level seen after Benghazi.

Rice said in several Sunday shows that the 2011 attacks on Benghazi occurred as a result of spontaneous protests in response to an anti-Muslim video, which was later determined to be inaccurate. Republicans on five House committees initially filed an interim report alleging that Rice had intentionally misled the public. However, the House Intelligence Committee later concluded that this was not the case.
