Sufjan Stevens spread his angel wings and reentered our atmosphere earlier this year with Aporia, a mostly instrumental New Age album he recorded with his stepfather, Lowell Brams. Now the shape-shifting artist has returned to Earth to announce a new solo LP, Ascension, which will launch through Asthmatic Kitty Records on September 25.
Ascension is Stevens first proper solo album since 2015 Carrie and Lowell–one of us favorite records of the decade—And it will feature 15 new songs, including “America,” a 12-minute song that will debut this Friday as the LP’s lead single.
Stevens himself designed the cover, which you can see below, and the album will come with a 16-page booklet of his drawings. Little has been revealed about the album in itself although it is reservation page at Rough Trade describes Ascension as “musically expansive and powerful themed, “which, yes, definitely sounds as a Sufjan Stevens record.
Stay tuned to our Sideways Present on Friday for our reflections on “America”. Down, yeahSee the album artwork as well as the song list with runtimes.
