Sturgis Motorcycle Rally: Rockband Smash Mouth performs in front of a crowd of hundreds

The concert took place during the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, a massive event that draws historically about 500,000 people to the area. Sturgis city officials told CNN that this year’s event would be a scaled-down version of the rally where health guidelines such as social distance are recommended.

The band was one of several artists planned to perform at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip campground, about 30 miles outside of Sturgis town.

In video recorded by CNN subsidiary KOTA-TV, a large crowd can be seen cheerfully during the performance, with a few masks in sight and no social distance.

At one point in the concert, a band member who is addressing the crowd may hear them say “F *** that Covid s ***.” It is unclear what he says before or after that comment.

The campsite, which often played a central role in the festivities of the 10-day event this year, added to its own safety measures, owner Rod Woodruff told CNN earlier, including signs reminding guests about social distance and their hands to keep sanitized.

Late last month, Sturgis Buffalo Chip announced that it had added more events for rally goers, including stunt shows and concerts. Several thousand people camp on the site, Woodruff said.
60% of Sturgis residents were against a motorcycle rally bringing in thousands, but the city has approved it. Here's why
The meeting is one of the largest to be held in the US since the beginning of the pandemic. Experts say they are worried it could be a superspreader event, as many attendees travel from across the country – including coronavirus hotspots – and could bring infections home when they return. But city officials said they felt they could not to stop the crowds from entering and instead chose to prepare for the event as best they could.

“What’s important for people to understand is in a very small community and rural area in western South Dakota. You can not get tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people without preparations, including waste and sanitation and extra law enforcement and medical emergency personnel,” Daniel Ainslie, the city manager, CNN reported earlier this week.

South Dakota has reported 9,663 cases of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the state health department.
