Sturgis motorcycle rally: At least 7 Covid-19 cases in Nebraska linked to the event in South Dakota

At least seven Covid-19 cases in the Panhandle region of Nebraska are linked to the rally, Kim Engel, director of the Panhandle Public Health District, confirmed in an email to CNN.

The department said tracing of contacts had been completed, and declined to comment further.

South Dakota health officials announced Thursday that a person working at a tattoo parlor in Sturgis had tested positive for the virus, and people may have been exposed during the incident last week.

The person was an employee of Asylum Tattoo Sturgis, and was able to spread the virus to others on August 13-17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., officials said.

Earlier this week, officials said a person who had spent hours at a bar during the rally also tested positive. That individual visited One-Eyed Jack’s Saloon in Sturgis on August 11 from noon to 5:30 p.m., while he was able to transmit the virus to others, health officials said.

Anyone who visited the tattoo parlor or salon located at the same address during the period should check for symptoms 14 days after the visit.

Rally had caused concern

Health experts were worried that Sturgis’ motorcycle rally could be a “super spreader” event this year. The 10-day mass rally typically draws crowds of more than 500,000 people from across the country, including coronavirus hotspots.

South Dakota transportation officials tracked more than 462,000 cars that Sturgis entered during the rally. Although the total was a decline of 7.5% from the previous year, it is still one of the largest mass gatherings since the beginning of the pandemic.

Many of those present did not follow health guidelines such as wearing masks and keeping their distance from others, as seen at a concert for the rock band Smash Mouth.

A little over 60% of the people in Sturgis voted against holding the motorcycle event. But city officials said they felt they could not stop the crowds from entering and instead chose to prepare as well as possible for the event.

“There are people all over America who have been locked up for months and months,” Daniel Ainslie, the city manager, told CNN last week. “That we’re always heard from people saying it does not matter, they’re coming to Sturgis. So with the decision, the council finally decided that it was really for the community to be prepared for the extra people we’ll end up with. have. “

South Dakota reported 193 new cases Friday. It is one of several U.S. states that have seen an increase in new cases this past week compared to the week before, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

CNN’s Eric Levenson and Christina Maxouris contributed to this report.
