Study finds these are the best non-medical face masks

MOUTH MOUSE, Florida – Have you ever wondered which face mask is the best to protect yourself from the coronavirus? From cotton-layered masks to scarves, researchers have their answer.

A team of scientists from Florida Atlantic University published a study comparing different types of non-medical face masks that offer the best protection, CNN reported.

Led by researcher Siddhartha Verma, one team studied four types of masks: a bandana, a cone-style mask used in pharmacies, a bandana, and a mask made from a T-shirt. Using a mannequin, they determined how well the face masks block drops from leaving the mouth.

CNN reported that the team also used a laser to detect the drops as the mannequin sneezed and coughed to trace its path.

And the results of the study are in: the shirt and the bandana masks are more effective than the bandana, significantly reducing drops.

“If you look at the fabric, the individual threads are relatively thick and everything is very well woven together,” Verma said in the study. “That is why he was able to prevent the drops from spreading too far.”

According to the study, the researchers also found that bandana-style liners and other baggy masks are less effective as they filter up to 50% of drops from the nose and mouth.

The study also showed that the drops traveled an average of eight feet without a mask. According to the CNN report, Verma said that the masks are not a substitute for social distancing.
