Stonehenge News: Archaeologists Reveal Huge Slabs That Got to Salisbury Plain | Science | News

The idea that the Altar Stone came from Milford Haven had a profound influence on theories about how the blue stones were transported to Stonehenge, with the idea that the Altar Stone may have been collected along the way.

Consequently, many experts suggested that the Blue Stones and the Altar Stone be shipped in rafts from Milford Haven through the Bristol Channel, before traveling the final leg to Salisbury Plain by land.

The theory had proven so popular, in fact, that several attempts have since been made to recreate the journey.

However, recent studies have questioned the original connection between the Altar Stone and the sandstone outcrops in South Wales and Pembrokeshire, and similarly challenge the notion that the blocks traveled by sea from Milford Haven.

Some researchers have even concluded that the bluestones originated on the northern flanks of the Preseli Hills, meaning that to traverse Milford Haven and the sea, they would first have to have been tortuously dragged down the hills.
