Stock futures sink after President Trump confirms he has coronavirus


President Trump confirmed in a tweet that he and the first lady had tested positive for the coronavirus after US equity futures sank 1.6% or more than 500 Dow points.

At 0:05 a.m. Eastern time, the Dow futures are down 1.3% or 350 points.

The S&P 500 is down 1.3% or 45 points. The Nasdaq is down 1.8% or 200 points.

Dow Industries was down just 50 points before the announcement.

“Tonight, @Flotus and I tested positive for COVID-19,” the president wrote. “We will immediately begin our quarantine and recovery process. We will meet with this!”

“It’s an understatement to say this could potentially be a big deal,” Rabobank said in a comment. “Either way, everything is now reversing the latest incredible turn of the U.S. election campaign.”

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei ended the trading session below 0.8%, returning from a day in which its trading day stalled due to technical failure in the market.

Markets in Hong Kong and China were closed the next day due to the holiday.

European markets opened lower following the news. London’s FTSE is down 0.7%, Germany’s DX is down 0.8% and France’s CAC is down 0.9%.

Gold is trading at 1,915.30 dollars with a decline of 70 cents.

In energy markets, US crude is down 3% or 15 1.15 at .5 37.57. Brent crude also closed at 3%, or 6 1.24 at .6 39.69.

News of the president and the first lady’s positive coronavirus test came just hours after Hope White’s senior White House adviser, Hope Hicks, tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement, White House spokesman Jude Deere said the president takes care of his own health and the safety of everyone who works for him and the American people.

“The White House rations are collaborating with the President and the White House Military Office Fees with the Practitioner Physician to ensure that all plans and procedures limit current CDC guidelines and content to both the potential for CVV-19 exposure. And when the president is traveling, ”Deere said.
