State declared Flex Alert via Wednesday as heatwave threat poses rolling blackouts

The state on Sunday released a new Flex Alert calling for electricity retention over the next four days of an expected heat wave.

The California ISO issued the Flex Alert for every day from 15 to 10 hours from Sunday to Wednesday. The Flex Alert is a call for Californians to save power when a record-breaking heat wave hangs in the state. It also means consumers need to be prepared to stop rolling in the late afternoon and early evening.

Conservation is necessary due to power requirements in the first place of more air conditioning and other equipment in use to keep cool. It remains in operation as the sun sets, as production of solar energy decreases, even as the heat remains in the evening.

The ISO requires Californians:

  • Keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. You can also “pre-cool” your home by setting the morning to a colder temperature before the energy demand picks up.
  • Consume use of large appliances.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and unplug unused devices.
  • Close blinds and draperies.
