An unconfirmed and potentially untrue internet rumor suggests that Disney may restart the entire cinematic universe of “Star Wars”, deleting “The Force Awakens”, “The Last Jedi” and “Rise of Skywalker” from the main timeline of the events.
The rumor, which comes from the YouTube channel Doomcock Overlord on DVD, suggests that there is some internal confusion at Disney about the new direction of the “Star Wars” franchise. (The YouTuber previously reported spoilers for “Rise of Skywalker” and details on the “Captain Marvel” sequel.)
The entire report is unconfirmed and unlikely. But let’s talk about the details for a second and see what it could mean for the “Star Wars” franchise in the future.
So, the rumor suggests that Disney would use a concept of “Star Wars Rebels” to erase the events of the sequel trilogy, turning them into their own alternate universe and their own event timeline.
How would it work? “Star Wars Rebels” introduced an idea called Veil of the Force, which was a mythical dimension connecting time and space. It helps you see past and future events. Disney would use the concept to change the series.
In “Rebels”, the character Ezra Bridger jumps to the portal. “Inside, he found doors between time and space, and he saved his friend Ahsoka Tano from death at the hands of Darth Vader.”
Here are some clips of “Rebels” that could help you understand the “Veil of Force”. In the scenes, Emperor Palpatine almost managed to enter the Jedi Temple through the Force Veil.
How the ‘Force Veil’ can change ‘Star Wars’
OK. So. The rumor suggests that Disney would use the Veil of the Force to make the entire sequel trilogy an alternate universe, creating a timeline of events that could have happened if certain things happened differently. It would no longer be the history of the canon.
How would this happen? This is where the details are a little sketchy. But it starts with Emperor Palpatine, who reportedly had a room in the Second Death Star called the “Room of Mirrors”. The mirrors were used to perform Sith rituals. For example, Palpatine reportedly used the mirrors to manipulate the Force so that the Jedi Council could not see that Chancellor Palpatine was Darth Sidious in the prequel trilogy, according to Cosmic Book News.
Palpatine – suggests this rumor – used the mirrors again when Darth Vader threw him down the well at the end of “Return of the Jedi”. He opened a portal in the Force Veil and ended up on Exegol, the planet where we found him in “The Rise of Skywalker”. This explains why he is damaged but not completely dead in that movie.
Disney, to reset the universe, would create (probably? Maybe? Who knows?) A scene where someone prevents Palpatine from reaching Exegol, so he dies at the end of “Return of the Jedi” as originally intended.
Palpatine dies at that moment. No more manipulative events. No more first order. No more dark idea influence on Ben Solo.
The sequel trilogy exists on its own as its own product.
What would this mean?
This would make the sequel’s trilogy its own event timeline, sort of like the “Star Wars Legends” novels, which were written and published before Disney bought “Star Wars”.
It would create a multiverse of “Star Wars” events. So what happened in the sequel trilogy is different from what happened in “Legends”, and would be different compared to what happens next.
Now, this does not mean that the events of the sequel trilogy would not happen. Rey’s parents were probably alive when Palpatine died in “ROTJ”. Then they would still try to hide Rey. But the First Order, Snoke, and the events that follow from that could change because Palpatine didn’t exist.
Should you believe this rumor?
Take any rumor with a grain of salt. It would be hard to believe that Disney would invest millions and win billions from a franchise just to reset everything.
That said, Disney has already considered the old novels of the expanded universe to be “Legends,” so there is already an escape route and a precedent for alternative universes for “Star Wars.”
There’s even more evidence for this theory in the sequel trilogy, funny enough. In “Last Jedi”, Rey jumps into the cave on the dark side where she sees mirror images of herself. In “Rise of Skywalker”, see Dark Rey, a version of herself consumed by the dark side. We never really have a good explanation for this. But considering these little moments as signs of alternate universes would be a nice and orderly way of putting it all together.
But this raises questions about “The Mandalorian” and “Star Wars Resistance”, two shows that take place after “Return of the Jedi”. Are those two canonical series? How does this work for future products? Will Disney force the timeline so that everything and nothing are all “Star Wars” at once?
And would there be violent reaction from the fan? Sure, not all fans love the sequel trilogy. But let’s say you erase it completely. Will people get even madder because the sequel trilogy was basically a waste of time?
There isn’t much “Star Wars” content at the moment. We are still waiting for “The High Republic” novels and movie news is hard to find. For now, all we can do is speculate about the future.
