Meet the new team who is bravely going nowhere. Here is the trailer for Star Trek: lower decks, the first animated comedy series set in the Trek universe, and is a long way from the Enterprise spacecraft.
This latest Star Trek show focuses on the junior support team aboard an insignificant Starfleet starship, the USS Cerritos. It premieres on August 6 on CBS All Access, with new episodes airing every Thursday. (Disclosure: CNET is part of ViacomCBS).
Encouraged by the producer behind Big Mouth, Lower Decks is led by Mike McMahan, Emmy-winning writer and producer of Rick and Morty and Hulu’s solar opposites. Lower Decks clearly shares the irreverent sci-fi streak of those shows, not to mention the same love for the grim alien splatter.
Lower Decks is not the first cartoon to hit your screens. We’ve already seen Captain Kirk and his crew in animated action at the Animated series fondly remembered in the early 1970s.
Most recently, Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard are available to stream now on CBS All Access, or Netflix and Amazon outside of the U.S.
At some point, they’ll be joined by a series highlighting Starfleet’s black operations team, Section 31, and a show that follows Mr. Spock’s early days aboard the Enterprise in Star Trek: strange new worlds. There is also news of another cartoon coming to Nickelodeon.
