Google Stadium has been on the market for almost a year now, and so far it has not made an official debut on Google’s own Android TV platform. It’s making progress on that, and as it progresses, Google Stadium has added 4K HDR support for games on Android TV.
As detected by Cloud Gaming XTreme over on YouTube, the latest update of Stadia 4K HDR support seems to be enabled on at least some Android TV devices. Under the “Performance” section of Stadia’s settings, there is a switch to enable 4K support as well as HDR support on your device.
This demo was performed on an Nvidia Shield TV, and I also confirmed it on a JBL Link Bar. This probably works on any Android / TV device that supports this resolution.
Remarkably, we have found evidence that this came back as far as this May, but the switches just seem to be live in Stage 2.26. In the same version, Google also improved controller support within the app. With both changes, it is very clear that full Android TV support is difficult.
