St. Louis Cardinals game postponed after positive coronavirus testing

MLB Network was the first to report the postponement on Friday. MLB has not identified the two Cardinals who tested positive.

For now, Friday’s game at Milwaukee’s Miller Park, which was to be the Brewers’ opening game for the season, has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader for Sunday.

That’s “consistent with protocols to allow enough time for additional testing and tracing contacts,” MLB said Friday.

A Saturday match between the two clubs was still scheduled on Friday afternoon.

“We support Major League Baseball’s decision to postpone today’s game and look forward to playing our first game at home as soon as conditions allow,” David Stearns, Brewers general manager and president of baseball operations, said Friday.

“The health and safety of our players and employees are, and will continue to be, our top priorities,” said Stearns.

Marlins and Phillies have also had positive results.

The coronavirus-related deferrals began after members of the Miami Marlins contracted Covid-19 earlier this month.

MLB Phillies say two employees tested positive for coronavirus after playing Marlins

After Miami opened the season against the Philadelphia Phillies last week, several Marlins players tested positive. Despite the results, the two teams agreed to play the third game in the series on July 26.

Then more Marlins members tested positive, and the Marlins’ season was suspended at least on Sunday.

As of Friday, 18 Marlins players and two coaches had tested positive, a team source told CNN on condition of anonymity.

The Phillies have also seen many of their games postponed. First, because they had played against the Marlins, the Philadelphia games with the New York Yankees this week were postponed as a precaution.

Then, the Philadelphia games against the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend were postponed after two Phillies staff members tested positive.

The MLB shortened season is played without fans and introduces new rules, including a ban on hitting all five and spitting, to prevent the spread of the virus.

Infected Marlins head to Florida for more exams, source says

The 20 positive Marlins players and staff traveled Friday on several night buses to South Florida, where they will receive additional tests and evidence, the source within the team told CNN.

Major League Baseball health officials approved the measure, the source said.

The Marlins have been isolating and quarantining at a team hotel in Philadelphia since their last game there on July 26. The non-positive team members remained in Philadelphia on Friday, the source said.

CNN’s Eric Levenson contributed to this report.
