SSD is no way to move PS5 games from the Eurogamerenet

And PS5 Game Saves cannot be backed up over USB.

Continuing our PlayStation 5 review process, Digital Foundry today offers a guided tour of the excellent new user interface by exploring the menu system and new functionality – and a few inconvenient issues came to light during the recording of this video. The big one is this: right now, there is no way to copy PS5 games away from the main system storage, presenting problems when the SSD is full. In this scenario, the only way to install new games is to delete old games, which means you’ll need to re-download them to play again – by deleting Others Install PS5 games in the process. 4 games installed on PlayStation PS5 are not affected – this you can Will be moved to external USB storage.

Similar to the Xbox series consoles, next-generation games for the PS5 can only be played with internal storage (or a 1TB expansion card, in the case of a Microsoft console) and therefore, Sony has not whitelisted any third-party M2. NVM drives for extra solid state drive space. However, the difference here is that the Xbox console allows all games to be archived on old and new external storage. You can’t play front-end games from there, but at least you can shuttle the title from the internal storage and without re-downloading. This doesn’t seem to be a viable solution for the PS5.

To test this, we filled up the PS5’s 667GB of available storage with PS4 games, then tried installing a new PS5 title. The system asks that we fill in the blanks, as you would expect – and the only way to do this with PS5 game data is to delete it. In an age where games regularly break the 100GB barrier, these present problems and we hope Sony will address this as a matter of urgency.

John Linneman of Digital Foundry presents a guided tour of the PlayStation 5 user interface. Game storage options are presented around the nine minute mark.

No less an issue, but still more limited than the PS4 is the way the PS5 handles game save data. On the PS5 user interface, it is still possible to backup and restore PS4 game data from USB. However, the USB option is gone when addressing the PS5 saves. This is clearly a guess from me, but the game save system on the PS4 was hacked many years ago – and it’s possible to buy software that tweaks to save with your cheats, or allow you to share your save with other users, instantly platinum Giving a trophy, for example.

By saving the PS5 data completely under Sony’s control, this increases security – but at the expense of user convenience. It should be noted that the PS5 automatically archives data by placing it in the cloud, similar to the solution on the MicroSF console after the Xbox One launches.

The SSD storage issue – and the lack of PS5 title archive options – is a concern, and we’ve contacted Sony for comment.
