Spotify is one of the largest music streaming services on the market today, but it still feels a little behind on certain features. Today, the company has announced that real-time lyrics will be coming to Spotify, but only in selected regions.
TechCrunch reports that Spotify will release real-time lyrics in 26 countries starting today, June 30. Those countries include parts of Southeast Asia, India, and Latin America, as well as four markets that already had some form of lyrical support: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Mexico.
However, one notable country missing from that list is the United States.
Spotify was first seen testing lyrics in real time last year, but the company was silent on a broader release. In the time since then, competitors like Apple Music and Google’s new YouTube Music have added the feature, even in the US Spotify borrows the same location with its own lyrics feature, which displays the lyrics on the back. bottom of the “Now Playing” screen when a user touches “Lyrics”. The language displayed matches the song itself.
Why has it taken so long? Spotify blames “the complexities around lyrics and licenses.” This latest attempt to deploy the full lyrical support is thanks to a partnership with Musixmatch.
