Spotify on Windows / Mac desktop finally lets you start a Chromecast session

After many, many years, you can now start a Chromecast stream from the Spotify desktop app. You have long been able to control Chromecast streams that started from the iOS and Android apps (via Spotify Connect), but now you can initiated those streams directly from your Windows or Mac desktop.

The news comes through Spotify Rock Star MattSuda: As they point out, you’ll find the feature in the desktop app version 1.1.38. In this version, you can simply use the usual “available devices” menu to view available Chromecast devices.

Good news!

You can now find Chromecast in the connection “available devices” menu in the Spotify desktop app and browser web player. You can now stream your music to Chromecast from the desktop app without having to use the iOS or Android app.

Make sure your Spotify desktop app is up to date

This feature takes a long time to arrive. If you’re a regular Chromecast user, like me, you’re probably going to be dealing with the frustration of not being able to start a Chromecast stream from your desktop. In fact, this was one of the benefits of running the Spotify mobile app on the Chrome OS desktop, and running the iOS version on an Apple Silicon Mac would have also enabled this functionality.

Fortunately, it seems that we can all start those Cast broadcasts directly from the desktop forever, without the need for workarounds.
