Sporting Kansas City 0, Minnesota United FC 3 | 2020 MLS Cup Play Offs Match Recap

Minnesota United FC are in their first Western Conference final after winning 3-0 on Thursday night in the conference semifinal stage of the Nes D2020 MLS Cup playoffs.

Emanuel “Babello” Renoso had three assists, twice hitting a corner kick before fielding Kevin Molino for the first half strike that left Debbie going to cap a 12-minute blitz in the 45th minute early in the home run. Dan St. Clare made some key defenses early on, then immediately allowed the children to calm the crowd in Mercy Park.

Molino made it 1-0 in the 27th minute after being played by Renoso, beating Sporting Backline with a combination play before tucking past goalkeeper Tim Melia quietly.

The quality of Molino and Renoso came to the surface after that when Minnesota opened the 2-0 lead in the 35th minute. The former Boca Juniors midfielder snapped a left-footed pass at the Trinidad and Tobago International, hitting a right-footed shot at home after tracking a pass over his shoulder and thumbing inside a distant post.

Just four minutes later, in Sporting’s zonal marking scheme, Debbie returned home with a powerful victory over Renston’s sw-0, beating Winston Reed by a cross.

Not without sports opportunities, especially in the early stages. Johnny Russell simply pinched Michael Bull’s header into the sector back to provide guide line clearance to St. Clair in the 2nd minute. St. Clair also fired a close-range header from Roberto Punsek in the 15th minute, tying the ball just an inch to refuse Russell to break Russell in the 14th minute.

Three things

  • Big picture: Minnesota MLS Is in his fourth year as a club, and he is now one game away from competing for the 2020 MLS Cup. The 2019 season included a one-off exit from Round One, but they were reloaded and not like anyone else’s laundry list of injuries this season. Speaking of sporting, they were under pressure to be the No. 1 seed and couldn’t deliver. Star striker Alan Pulido was not healthy after much anticipation, and one should wonder how SKCA would have impacted him.
  • Moment of the match: Kevin Molino’s second goal was pure class. Then whether it was a chipped pass at the top or a peach of Molino’s finish, he gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead and put them in cruise control.

  • Man of the match: Emanuel “Babello” Renoso became the first player in MLS history to record multiple three assist playoff games. He has done so in consecutive matches, including a 3-0 Round One win over Minnesota’s Colorado Rapids. Pull it even further and Renoso has assisted 10 of Minnesota’s last 12 goals, which he carries in the regular season.
