Spending on video games in the United States reached its highest point since 2010, according to a new report by the NPD Group, with sales through June of $ 6.6 billion in hardware, software and accessories. It is the highest total for the first six months of the year since spending reached $ 7 billion a decade ago.
Spending has been dramatically higher in 2020 than last year, with sales up to June at 19 percent year-over-year, and June sales specifically increased 26 percent compared to the same month in 2019. While NPD numbers do not mention a Due to the specific reason for the increase in sales, it is difficult not to conclude that an important factor was the increase in video game caused by millions of people who had a sudden boost in the free time thanks to the stops of COVID-19.
US NPD VG: Expenditure to date on hardware, software, accessories, and video game cards reached $ 6.6 billion, an increase of 19% compared to the previous year. This is the highest total for the period to date since $ 7.0 billion was achieved in 2010. pic.twitter.com/r1DlD7OIfM

It’s also not the first record 2020 set for video game sales – US spending hit an all-time quarterly record earlier this year. And with new consoles on the way in the fall from Microsoft and Sony (in the form of Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5) to boost hardware sales, the record 2020 race may be far from over.
