On Saturday afternoon PT / 3pm ET From Saturday, a group of SpaceX engineers working on the Starlink Satellite Project will answer questions about its Better to Nothing Beta program on Reddit. The Starlink program’s ultimate goal is to provide global Internet coverage from space, and SpaceX began public beta testing last month after launching a private beta over the summer.
Beta users will have to purchase all Starlink Ground equipment in l 499 and then pay a 99 monthly fee for active service to participate in the program. “As we expand the Starlink system, users will be able to” change data speeds from 50Mb / s to 150Mb / s and latency from 20ms to 40ms in the next few months, “the people invited to the public beta said in an email. The email also hinted that there would be a short period of connectivity, and that the company was preparing to launch more satellites and install more ground equipment, and that would improve accessibility and data speed.
SpaceX has already entered 900 low-Earth orbits out of the 12,000 satellites planned for the Starlink system. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, said the company needed 800 satellites in space to provide “significant operational capabilities”.
