South Korea sees biggest increase in coronavirus cases in months

South Korean health officials said Sunday that the country had reported a new daily coronavirus casonavirus of nearly 300 cases, the highest number since the country since March.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 279 cases were confirmed in the country over a 24-hour period, the highest seen since March 6 when the pandemic spread in the southern, rural regions of the country.

The newly confirmed cases are particularly prevalent in the country’s capital Seoul, raising concerns from health officials that the virus could spread to the more densely populated metropolitan area, according to The Associated Press.

The country’s test positivity rate remains just below 1 percent, and the total number of confirmed cases in the country now stands at just over 15,000. 305 South Koreans have died as a result of the disease.

South Korea and other East Asian countries remain well below the US, Brazil, and India, all of which have reported millions of cases of the virus with hundreds of thousands of new positive tests reported each week.

South Korea has largely been hailed as a success story due to its widespread use of drive-to-test and other measures to prevent the spread of the virus, the country also signed a deal with Maryland officials to buy thousands of coronavirus test kits for the able to deliver.
