Sources: Pac-12 has a conference-only 10-game soccer whiteboard plan

The Pac-12 has a plan to play a 10-game soccer schedule starting on September 19, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

Two weeks ago, the Pac-12 announced that it would go on a conference-only schedule and delay the start of the season as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Details for a 10-game schedule have been stepped up in recent weeks, and includes built-in break weeks in case there are games that can’t be played as scheduled.

San Jose Mercury News first reported the details of the new Pac-12 programming plan.

The Pac-12 championship game is scheduled for December 4, but a source told ESPN that there is flexibility on a December date.

“We are leaving a few weeks open just in case,” the source said.

The 10-game plan has not been fully completed as there are some nuances to be resolved and university presidents have yet to approve the plan. One option would be to stick with the usual nine-game schedule.

A final decision on scheduling is expected to be announced next week.

To go from a nine game league schedule to a 10 game league schedule, multiple models had to be run. Teams in opposing divisions had to be matched together, and those in need of a home game also helped determine matchups.
