Sources – Big Ten pulls plug on fall college football season

Big ten conference chairmen and chancellors voted Tuesday to postpone all seasons of the fall sport, including football, with the hope of playing in the spring, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

The league is expected to make a formal announcement later on Tuesday once it notifies its players and coaches.

On Sunday, ESPN first reported that Big Ten presidents, following a meeting on Saturday, were ready to cancel the fall sports season, and they wanted to determine whether commissioners and university presidents and chancellors of the other Power Five conferences – the ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC – would fall in line with them.

Pac-12 presidents and chancellors met on Tuesday and are also expected to vote on whether to continue with a fall schedule or point after the spring.

Sources told ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura on Monday night that there is a growing feeling around the conference that the Pac-12 is highly unlikely to move forward with a fall season amid concerns over the coronavirus pandemic and will look forward to playing in the spring, if possible.

Officials with the ACC and SEC have indicated they plan to continue with these seasons, but it is unclear whether the Big Ten’s decision will change those plans.
