After nine COVID-19 cases within the football program in their final Test round, the Sooners will now have to continue without returning to their standout.
The Athletic announced that on Sunday afternoon Kennedy Brooks has opted to take down the 2020 season, not much more than 24 hours after Lincoln Riley announced that nine team members had tested positive for COVID-19 and several others were quarantined via contact tracking.
Athletic’s Jason Kersey, quoting unnamed sources, said Brooks told Riley on Sunday afternoon. The news seemed to grab Riley. Riley had a video press conference on Saturday and said Brooks was positioned for a big season.
“Kennedy is back in the best shape he has been at the moment,” Riley said.
“We all see this through our own lens,” Riley said. “You can not decide on a blanket … at this point we have not had any players who have decided to take them down. Will it happen? Nice to say. It could certainly.”
A day later, it happened for the first time, and it left Oklahoma’s escaped attack without its bread and butter. It was expected that Brooks would lead the Sooners’ Backers Commission in 2020 Trey Sermon transferred to Ohio State. The redshirt junior has topped 1,000 yards on the ground in each of the last two seasons, shoving most of the load down last year after Sermon ended an injury to the season. Brooks averaged an absurd 8.9 yards per carry in 2019, and found the end zone 12 times.
