Some residents of the Houston area to experience periodic power outages due to Hurricane Laura

HOUSTON – Texans, along with residents of the Houston area, would have to expect periodic power outages due to the impact of Hurricane Laura.

Entergy announced the outage to its Texas customers Thursday after its transmission system suffered extensive damage from the hurricane. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) instructed Entergy to take this action as a last resort to avoid a prolonged power outage, which could severely affect the reliability of the electricity grid, according to Entergy.

It is unclear how long the power outages will last, but MISO is urging the energy company to stop the periodic outage as soon as the lack of power no longer threatens the integrity of the rest of the electrical energy system, according to a press release.

Entergy is also asking its customers in the western area of northern Houston to reduce their electricity consumption as indicated by MISO.

Here are some suggested ways in which Entergy customers can reduce their electricity consumption:

  • Raise the central climate thermostat to 78 degrees. Window units need to be adjusted accordingly
  • Use energy-efficient electric ceiling fans and portable fans to circulate air and help residents feel cooler
  • Close window blinds, curtains and drapes to reduce indoor heating due to direct sunlight
  • Check the climate filter to make sure it is clean
  • Delay whitewashing of clothes, washing, bathing, etc. until later in the evening or early morning. These activities produce moisture and increase the humidity in the house, making the air conditioner work harder
  • Wash clothes with cold water, sow food in the lowest possible setting, and resist the temptation to open the oven door while baking
  • Do not allow chilled air to escape from the house. Check wheels around doors and windows. Close the flint. Fill holes and holes where wiring and wires enter the house
  • Make sure your washer dryer and solder are well ventilated
