‘Some’ Red Sox players have tested positive for coronavirus

The first day of the Red Sox summer camp was not all smiles and sunshine.

Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke told reporters on Friday that the team had “some positive tests for coronavirus.”

Roenicke did not say which players tested positive for COVID-19, citing MLB rules. He also said that MLB rules prohibit him from saying how many players have tested positive.

Pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez did not report to the camp and is awaiting the results of his test after he came into contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus, Roenicke told reporters. Roenicke said Rodriguez allowed him to share why he was not at summer camp on Friday, according to Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald.

If a player tests positive for COVID-19, he will be placed on the Injured List, but the team cannot announce whether he tested positive for the coronavirus, MLB said Tuesday.

While the team has been affected by the coronavirus, Roenicke said there is no “baseball-like” injury to report.

The Red Sox set some guidelines for social distancing at Fenway Park for summer camp. Player locker rooms were moved from the clubhouse to the Deluxe Suites, with two players in each suite. Training areas were placed throughout the Fenway lobby.
