SLO County Reports Death of Eighth Resident with COVID-19


San Luis Obispo County reports Thursday that an eighth county resident has died with COVID-19.

Health officials say the person was 80 years old with underlying health problems. The patient had been hospitalized for three days after being discharged from a long-term care facility that recently had an outbreak.

San Luis Obispo County also reported 74 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the county’s total to 1,467 confirmed cases as of July 23.

It is the largest single-day increase in cases since the pandemic began.

Fourteen people are hospitalized, including four patients who are in the ICU.

Another 465 people are recovering at home and 978 have recovered.

COVID-19 tests are currently publicly available in Grover Beach and San Luis Obispo.

An emerging testing clinic will open in Morro Bay for three days next week: Monday, July 27 through Wednesday, July 29.

Health officials say 445 cases, or about 30% of the county’s total, are the result of the patient’s direct contact with a person who tested positive for the virus; 382 cases are attributed to the spread of the community; and, 121 cases are the result of traveling out of the county. Another 519 cases are still under investigation.

Another 26 cases are in communities with fewer than five cases, and the Department of Public Health is not identifying those locations. The location of eleven cases is listed as “under investigation”.
