Slack now lets you choose when to receive notifications per day, which means you can finally stop receiving Slack pings over the weekend.
Previously, Slack allowed you to configure when it was “available” to receive notifications, but those preferences would also carry over to the weekends. That meant you could get distracting and unnecessary notifications from Slack on your computer or phone while enjoying a lazy Sunday.
Now, however, you can set when you’re comfortable receiving notifications, but activate a general no-notice policy for weekends (or the days / times that best fit your schedule) if you like.
When you have notifications turned off, you’ll be in Slack Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, which means that other users in your Slack workspace will see a small “z” in the dot next to their name indicating their status. While in DND, if you open Slack, you will still see red badges on channels where you or a keyword are mentioned and for any direct messages, but you will not be notified about those messages. (However, if necessary, people can still send you a notification while on DND by sending you a direct message and forcing Slack to send one.)
If you want to fine-tune your Slack notifications, here’s how to do it.
In the desktop app:
- Click the arrow near the name of your Slack organization, then mouse over “Pause notifications”. From the pop-up menu, click “Set a notification schedule.”
- In the menu that opens, below the “Allow notifications” heading, there will be a drop-down menu that allows you to select whether you want to allow notifications every day, only during the week, or at a custom time. There are also drop-down menus that let you choose what time is fine for receiving notifications.
In mobile applications:
- Tap the “You” icon at the far right of the toolbar, and then tap “Notifications”
- From the Notifications menu, tap “Notifications schedule”.
- Then tap “Allow notifications” and you can select whether you want to receive notifications every day, only Monday through Friday or at a custom time.
That’s! And once you’ve set your preferences, they should sync to your devices. Hopefully, customizing these settings can reduce the number of notifications you receive when you don’t want to receive them, and you can enjoy weekends without Slack notifications.
