WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A Singaporean man who created a bogus consulting site to request information from the US government and military workers pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal agent of Chinese intelligence, the Justice Department said on Friday.
The sentence for Jun Wei Yeo, also known as Dickson Yeo, will be in October, according to the department. The United States is cracking down on Chinese espionage, as the FBI has interviewed dozens of visa holders about their possible ties to Chinese intelligence.
On Friday, a Chinese investigator who fled to the San Francisco consulate was expected to appear in court on charges that he lied about his Chinese military service, while the head of the U.S. counterintelligence agency warned that China and other nations could interfere with the November elections.
