Simon Pegg reportedly refused to return for Star Trek 4 unless he gets a bigger role

Based on recent developments, it seems Star Wars is not the only one of Hollywood’s long-running sci-fi franchises that seems to be stuck in creative trouble. That’s because it’s starting to look like no one at Paramount has any clue what’s going on Star Trek.

Since Justin Lin’s Gone placed some soft numbers at the office, the future of the big screen of Star Trek has become ignorant in the uncertainty, even when the extended universe on television seems to be going reasonably well. While very few people thought that Quentin Tarantino would actually come to ever direct an R-rated film, there was still a lot of confusion.

Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine both signed for Star Trek 4 before leaving with original director SJ Clarkson, and while Pine finally agreed to return, Legion showrunner Noah Hawley was hired to develop what was supposed to be the same project, only for the filmmaker to make it sound like he was working on a whole new concept. Still familiar?

Even Simon Pegg, who plays a large part in the franchise and co-wrote the latest installment, did not know if his version of the Enterprise crew would be completely back. De Mission: Impossible star is clearly not happy, and we have now heard from our sources – the same ones who told us that a Captain Pike spinoff is well under way Strange New Worlds was officially announced, and that a Witcher prequel is in development long before Netflix reveals it – that he refuses to return unless he gets a much more substantial role, and perhaps a bigger paycheck as well.

According to our Intel, the Hawley movie that was recently released is not the canonical one Star Trek 4 but a separate story in a new timeline, which means that the fourth adventure for the Kelvin crew may still happen in the not-too-distant future. But after being kept in the dark for so long, Pegg refuses to play ball unless his requirements are met.

While they could just go on and on making the film without him, he also became an important member of the Star Trek team from a creative standpoint, and the majority of his co-stars may also neglect to return if the entire bond will not be there. As such, and considering how much he is loved by fans, we can imagine that Paramount will listen to the actor and give him what he asks.
