The Twitter filter @ L0vetodream published today photos of the alleged Lightning to USB-C cable of the iPhone 12, with a new design of braided cable. The account originally said, on July 14, that the next iPhone would come with the new braided cable.
The latest rumors indicate that Apple will stop including the power adapter and headphones in the new iPhone cases, but is apparently improving the quality of the cable. Like the Apple Watch, we believe the iPhone 12 will come with just the Lightning to USB-C charging cable, with Apple clearly hoping that most users already have plenty of chargers to plug in.
Right now, only the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max come with a Lightning to USB-C cable as it comes with the Apple 18W USB-C charger. The cheapest iPhone 11 series includes the 5W charger and corresponding USB-A cable.
It is unclear whether Apple will switch Lightning to USB-C cables for each model this year.
In the images, we can see black and white versions of the cable. The shorter white version is what we can expect to see on the iPhone 12 case. The 2019 Mac Pro already comes with a black braided Lightning to USB-C cable, which is probably what is shown in the photo. @ L0vetodream suggests that Apple will also start using this cable with iMac Pro shipments.
Apple Lightning cables are reputed to easily fray and break. Hopefully the braided variants are more durable.
