SAN FRANCISCO – For the second consecutive season, the San Francisco Giants cut their Open Day off the right fielder before the player even recorded a base goal with the team.
The Giants announced Thursday that Joe McCarthy has been assigned to clear a roster spot for Joey Bart, the top prospect of the team that was promoted to make his major league debut against the Angels.
McCarthy follows in the footsteps of Michael Reed, who started in the right field for the Giants on Opening Day in 2019 and went 0-for-8 with six strikeouts before being drafted last year.
McCarthy went 0-for-10 with five strikeouts before being optional on the Giants’ Sacramento alternate side, but he never returned to the Premier League roster.
The Giants beat McCarthy in a minor league game with the Tampa Bay Rays at the 2019 trade date. .
McCarthy emerged as an unlikely candidate for the Roster of the opening day in summer camp after Brandon Belt fell with a serious injury. The club wanted a left-handed option at first base, but McCarthy never appeared at the position in his four games with the Giants.
The Giants’ decision to nominate McCarthy for commission led the team to hold first-round pick of the first round of 2015 Chris Shaw on the roster of 40 men. Like McCarthy, Shaw played the corner-outfield positions and first base and also batted left-handed, but he was dropped from the roster of the summer camp and has yet to receive an invitation to the club’s alternative side of Sacramento.
To clear a spot for Bart on the 28-man active man, the Giants’ save catcher Tyler Heineman has moved to their alternate side. Bart will be no. 21 carry, catch and handball in his premier class debut.
