Seward cancels all activities on July 4, as 10 new cases of COVID-19 were reported

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) – The Seward Chamber of Commerce has canceled its modified events on July 4 next weekend amid concerns about the coronavirus, as 10 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the city.

The Chamber canceled the annual Mt. Marathon race in May, along with the annual parade. He had also planned to host vendors and fireworks during the popular holiday weekend.

“As Seward continues to see an increase in positive COVID-19 cases, the House decided to walk away from our mitigation efforts and instead cancel July 4 in Seward,” the announcement said.

On Friday, the state of Alaska recommended that Alaska residents who had visited two Seward bars on certain days get tested for COVID-19. The announcement came a day after the lead singer of a popular band who had played in one of the venues said he had tested positive for the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Prior to Sunday, Seward had 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19, listed in state health department records, documenting one case in the community in which a patient permanently resides.

The community of less than 3,000 permanent residents saw three confirmed cases in late March and early April, and then went two months without a confirmed case. Between Wednesday and Saturday, six cases were reported to the state.

On Sunday, the count in Seward increased dramatically with 10 new cases; 8 between residents and 2 between non-residents.
