A vehicle crashed into a crowd of about 50 people during a protest Friday afternoon in central Manhattan, injuring several people, the New York City Police Department said.
The incident, which occurred just after 4pm on the corner of 39th Street and Third Avenue in the middle of the night, police said, the woman behind the wheel of the BMW sedan, who participated in the crowd, was detained for questioning by law enforcement.
Six people were taken to local hospitals by ambulance, the New York Fire Department said. Police and fire officials said the injuries did not appear to be fatal.
Some accounts on social media described a chaotic scene surrounding a parked car surrounded by protesters before the vehicle plunged into a crowd, knocking out some people and bicycles.
In a video showing the speed of the car, a small group of protesters slowly leaned around the car, while it was slowly approaching an intersection, it could have gathered around the car. The car suddenly sped off, knocking the occupants and the people at the intersection to one side.
In another video from the front, people are seen running away and a man is thrown under the barrel of a car.
Sophia Wickerman, of Denver, Colorado, who took part in the protest, said she pushed people and bicycles into the air when the car collided with the crowd.
He said, “I hear people screaming in front of me, I look behind me, the woman is farming.” “I see corpses flying.”
Vikram said the march began in Times Square and was intended to draw attention to the ongoing hunger strike by immigration detainees in New Jersey. A Reuters photographer at the scene also confirmed that the exhibition was held in solidarity with nine undocumented immigrants in the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
Police and several local media outlets said the protest was sponsored by Black Lives Matter.
