Seven killed in random knife incident outside Chinese school

State media and a report say a madman in a suspected random knife attack in China fatally attacked at least seven people – mostly elderly women.

The state broadcaster CCTV reported that the suspect, whose surname is only by his last name, was taken out of a closed school in Kaiyuan, Liaoning Province, early in the morning after Lohiabahn.

The man began attacking people, including some who appeared to have come out of a nearby bathroom, CCTV said. The victims also included seven wounded people, such as a cop who tried to stop him.

A woman named Liu told the South China Morning Post that most of the victims, who were not identified by authorities, were found to be middle-aged or elderly women.

Liu, who runs a nearby music studio, added that the attacker “appeared to be in his 50s.”

“[The suspect] Only attacked strangers with a knife. It was really scary, ”he said.

“It simply came to our notice then. Otherwise there would have been more victims. “

Chinese law prohibits the sale and possession of firearms, but mass attacks with knives have become a worrying problem.

In June, at least 39 people were injured when a school security guard stabbed a kindergarten in the southern region of Guangxi. The offender was sentenced to death.

In 2018, a knife attack at a shopping mall in Beijing killed one person and injured 12.
