Microsoft’s Surface Duo garners a lot of interest from the tech community, if only because it’s a breath of fresh air compared to the cycle release of today’s smartphones. Considered almost five years ago, it has been a long road for Surface Due to the beginning of next month long to finally land in customer hands.
CNET managed to get a non-working Surface Duo prototype from Microsoft that revealed all the inner workings of dual-screen Android devices. The plug is a 1: 1 to replica Surface Duo, including all Corning Gorilla Glass (both sides), and those that have captivating working hangers.
But the real charm comes from seeing the inside of Surface Duo, including all the custom components used to make those dual screens. As Microsoft’s chief producer Panos Panay detailed in the official Surface Duo Press Briefing, much thought went into making not only Surface Duo functional, but also “elegant” as Panay notes, as “it’s going away.”
Indeed, the 4.8mm thin (if open) Surface Duo is quite remarkable. In the CNET video, Scott Stein shows how the device handles, flips, and falls, giving a new perspective on how it works. The recordings also interpret some interviews with Panay and his team about the philosophy of Surface Duo.
After watching the eight minute video, you will probably get away with a new appreciation of the technical performance of Surface Duo. Unlike LG’s more cost-effective Velvet, Surface Duo is built from the ground up for dual monitors, but also to represent the pinnacle of modern engineering.
If you want to see more of the interiors of Surface Duo, CNET is posting some high quality photos to go along with the video which is also worth a look.
