Lindsey Buckingham has kept a low profile since being sidelined by emergency heart surgery in February 2019, but he returned on Friday for an acoustic set of four songs via Zoom for tech company Nutanix.
Buckingham played the Fleetwood Mac songs “Never Going Back Again” and “Big Love,” along with his solo cuts “Trouble” and “Shut Us Down,” marking the first time he has been publicly sung since the operation. (Fast forward to 8:23, 20:02, 32:50 and 44:54 to hear the songs.)
“This one [pandemic] has been like a few years before in which things happened that I did not see coming, ‘he said. ‘One was my split from Fleetwood Mac. Another had a bypass operation, which I did not expect to happen. You could say that this makes a trifecta of events that were completely off the charts. ‘
Buckingham’s vocal cords were damaged during the bypass operation. “While it is not clear if the damage is permanent, we hope it is not,” Buckingham’s wife, Kristen, said in a statement at the time.
His first appearance after the operation took place at his daughter’s high school graduation ceremony, where he played ‘Landslide’, but the students treated all focal points. He also announced a solo tour in February 2020 for April and May, but had to cancel due to the pandemic.
“There are things that are going to happen that you can’t control,” Buckingham says. “There is certainly a lesson in accepting it, but there is also a lesson in finding what is real in those circumstances. Yes, I have my talent and my artistic process that I really appreciate … Besides, I am here every day with my wife and my children and that is the gift that is essential for all this. That becomes the silver lining. You become soft, or not-so-soft, reminded of essences. ”
“We are very, very committed to Neil and Mike, and that died some time ago, when Lindsey left,” he said. “And it’s not a talking point, so I have to say no. It’s a complete drama by Fleetwood Mac, without a doubt. His legacy is alive and well, and as it should be. A big, big part that will never be taken away, and never spoken by any of us. “
