On Wednesday, the Board of NCAA Division I recommended protections over eligibility for student-athletes participating in fall sports.
The council endorsed a few exceptions that would provide safety to those athletes who both opt for the 2020 season option or play in 50 percent of the leagues.
Section I Council has recommended to the Department I governing body that student athletes of bankruptcy who participate and then opt for future participation or a season have a short time due to COVID-19: (1) an extension of their period of five years of eligibility; and (2) an additional season of competition if they participate in 50% of less than the maximum number of competitions allowed in each sport by Division I rules, ”the Division I Council wrote in a release.
Board members are expected to meet again on August 19 and more legislation is expected to be passed then, including an idea that bans universities from canceling, reducing or not renewing athletic assistance for student-athletes who ‘ t their choice to choose respective sport because of COVID-19.
Also planned to be discussed are financial aid limits for fallout athletes.
“In this time of uncertainty, Councilors are working to create extra flexibility for college athletes whose seasons have been adversely affected by the pandemic,” said Council President M. Grace Calhoun, Director of Athletics in Pennsylvania. “Every day things change in college sports, and we want to be as responsive as possible, with the best information, to help student-athletes and their families make important decisions for their future. The Council worked hard today and will seek input for membership before we make final recommendations to the board next week. ”
The NCAA has also updated the timeline of the recruiting dead period, which has been in place since March. It will now run through the month of September, according to the release.
This means that there will be no personal or on-campus visits during the first month of the college football season.
The current indefinite recruiting dead period that went into effect in March has not significantly affected the Miami Hurricanes on the recruiting track. Manny Diaz and his staff currently hold the no. 9 recruiting class, headed by Miami Palmetto five-star defensive tackle Leonard Taylor and Plantation American Heritage five-star athlete James Williams.
