Secretary of State in Colorado accuses Trump of lying about voting via mail

“President Trump is lying about voting by mail. He is reading about postal messages,” Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold told a Democrat. CNN’s Erin Burnett on “OutFront.”

“Colorado has a very clean history of conducting large-scale ballot elections by mail. We have safeguards in place to ensure that we will record every type of duplicate vote, including signature verification, voting collection rules and many other security measures. ”

Earlier Thursday, the president told Fox Business that he was opposed to needing funding for the U.S. Postal Service because he did not want to see it used for post-a-vote in November. Trump has been fighting post-in-votes for months amid efforts to expand it during the coronavirus pandemic.

Griswold told CNN that the president’s remarks “threaten voters because ballots are the best way to vote during a pandemic.”

“Forcing Americans in the choice to risk their lives to cast a vote is a measure to reduce the turnout in November,” she said. “We should all be worried about where the president is going.”

She argued that voice mail “is like wearing a mask” because it “is the way we can save Americans’ lives.”

“Americans should not have to choose between risking their lives and casting a vote,” she said.

The president has written claims that broader vote for mail-in would lead to voter fraud and hurt his re-election and Republicans across the board. But there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in U.S. elections, and non-partisan experts say no party automatically benefits if states extend access to voting by mail.

Trump said during a White House briefing Thursday that he wants Americans to vote this fall, but “they should go to a polls like before and vote.”

Griswold on CNN said it was unrealistic to vote every American vote in person in a polling station.

“I just think it’s so disgusting that the president is willing to risk American lives to try to shift power in this election,” she said.
