Second Tuolumne County Jail Inmate Tests Positive for COVID-19

Sonora, CA – The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports this afternoon that another inmate at the jail has tested positive for coronavirus.

The first inmate tested positive on July 15 and was released before the test results were known. The second case, confirmed today, is an inmate who has been in custody for the past few months. The positive inmate is now isolated and supervised, as directed by Dr. Liza Ortiz, Health Officer.

The Sheriff’s Office reports: “Potentially exposed inmates who are still on the premises have been provided with additional personal protective equipment and are being housed separately according to quarantine procedures.”

Additionally, the sheriff’s office is working closely with public health to take the necessary additional security measures and conduct periodic tests to identify any additional cases in jail.

The latest update from the Tuolumne County Department of Public Health noted Friday that there have been at least 85 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the county. Public health often waits until Monday to release weekend numbers, but with inmates joining, there are now at least 86 cases.
