We now know what the SEC scheme will look like if the conference has a fall football season in 2020.
The conference on Monday released its 10-game conference-only schedule. And, in true SEC fashion, that release was drawn to dramatic effect. The conference published Monday afternoon the 26th September Week 1 matchups ahead of the full schedule at 7pm ET Monday night.
Group 1 of this week’s matchups is marked by LSU starting their search for another national title at home against Mississippi State, now coached by Mike Leach. Alabama, after missing the College Football Playoffs for the first time in the lineup’s history, will open the game on its way to Missouri. In addition, Tenure of Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss will begin with a home game against Florida.
The SEC announced July 30 that it planned to play a 10-game, only conference schedule that would begin on September 26. Since then, the Big Ten and Pac-12 have canceled their fall seasons entirely due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
However, the SEC, along with the ACC and Big 12, shot forward. The conference, which typically features an eight-game schedule, added two SEC games to each team’s schedule on August 7th.
Iron Bowl is not the last week of the season
The SEC decided to hold its annual rivalry week during Thanksgiving weekend. That’s remarkable because the last week of the season is December. 5. Auburn and Alabama will play each other on November 28, while LSU Texas A&M will play and other rivals will be played as they typically are in the final week of the regular season.
LSU and Alabama play each other on Nov. 14. Both teams have an off week prior to the game as they normally do. The annual Florida and Georgia game is scheduled for Nov. 7 in Jacksonville.
The SEC title game is scheduled for Dec. 19. That’s one day ahead of the College Football Playoff selection program. Assuming there is a playoff.
