Seattle Kraken reveals nickname for NHL expansion team

The Seattle Kraken released its name, logo and colors in an online presentation on Thursday.

When the NHL expansion team starts playing in the 2021-22 season, its colors will be deep navy, ice blue, shadow blue, unlimited blue, and red alert.

Its logo will pay tribute to the Seattle metropolitans of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, who became the first team in the United States to win the Stanley Cup when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens in 1917, before the NHL was born.

It is an “S”, as in the Metropolitanos logo, but with a tentacle and a red eye.

“Seattle is a city with a deep maritime history,” said general manager Ron Francis. “I think this name represents a connection to the sea and a curiosity about what lies beneath it. It is a natural link to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.”

“In theory, it reflects power and aggression in the game of hockey. We hope it’s the kind of tenacity our players show every time they take ice. So I’m excited.”

Francis said NHL Seattle executives did a lot of research for 18 months, gathering around 1,200 names and 215,000 fan votes.

“They listened to the fans,” said Francis. “They did forums. They did surveys. They did events. They worked within the team and our leadership and the NHL and local artists and naming experts and historians and everyone else to get where they wanted and draw the logo. Up.

“At the end of the day, the Kraken always reached the top.”

Francis said the proceeds from merchandise sales in the first 30 days will benefit Seattle youth.
