You thought the Pearsons, of all families, could remove the coronavirus?
This is us creator Dan Fogelman has confirmed that Season 5 of NBC’s award-winning, highly emotional family drama will tackle the current coronavirus pandemic.
“Yes to Covid,” Fogleman shared on Twitter Sunday night, in response to a fan question. ‘We have decided to attack things. Very proud of @ThisIsUsWriters. ”
Emmy-nominated cast member Sterling K. Brown told TVLine in June that the pandemic – including recent, real-world topics – could affect his fictional family. “No. 1, there are thoughts in the writers’ room as to how and when to tackle the pandemic, right? And then in the past month / five weeks, since [the tragic deaths of] Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor and then George Floyd …, there is now like: ‘How do we address this too?’ ”
Fogelman, while feeling the second flurry of questions, also said there was still no schedule to announce yet for either of the production launches, let alone when new episodes will be aired. (This is us Season 5 is slated for premiere sometimes this fall / ‘fall’, rebroadcast on Tuesday at 9/8 c.) But he the confirm that the series was on course for ‘the same scheduled end. Same route to get in. ”
What else do we know about Season 5? SKB told TVLine that there would be “an excavation of Randall’s past, reunited with family” and asked for more “soul searching”, while Chrissy Metz said in April: “We will find out even more … about why [Kate] decided to … use a substance – herself is food – because she has been through some things we do not yet know.
How do you think specifically This is us will write in COVID? Will Kevin wrestle with the lack of acting work as an uncomfortable return to the set? Will Randall / Beth stress about the girls who will (or will not) go to school?
