NORMAN – University of Oklahoma Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced today that the OU season opener soccer game against the state of Missouri in Norman was moved to Saturday, August 29, a week earlier than originally scheduled.
The NCAA approved a waiver request from both schools to change the game date to allow them more flexibility in scheduling to address potential problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic. OU’s second game of the season is scheduled for September 12 at Norman, while her third contest is scheduled for September 26 at Army in West Point, New York.
“If the season is allowed to start as scheduled, the benefit of extra time between games will help our teams handle any variety of possible circumstances that may occur,” Castiglione said. “Our original schedule had an open date between the second and third games, so we will now have a five-week span to play three games. It provides us with a more gradual approach to safely managing the conditions of these unprecedented times. We are grateful to the State of Missouri for their cooperation during this process and to the NCAA for allowing both teams to start the season a week early. “
August 29 is the first day of the 2020 college football season, and as of Friday only three other contests with FBS teams had been scheduled for that day: Marshall in East Carolina, Idaho State in New Mexico and UC Davis in Nevada.
The OU-Missouri State will broadcast information and other details such as potential stadium capacity limitations, revised game-day procedures and new security protocols to be announced in the coming weeks.
