Scientists catch bats around trace of COVID-19 origin in Thailand

Scientists in Thailand are digging caves to capture bats in an attempt to trace the origin of the coronavirus.

The research team climbed a hill to set up nets at Sai Yok National Park in the western province of Kanchanaburiand to catch about 200 batons from three different caves, according to the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases-Health Science Center.

They took samples of saliva, saliva and stool from the mammals to better understand the pathogens they carry.

The outbreak of coronavirus was thought to have originated from bats in China, although the research team believes they may also find the virus among those in Thailand.

The closest match to COVID-19 so far was found in horse bat in Yunnan in southern China.

Many of the bats caught by Thai researchers were horse bats, because there are 19 different species of them in the country.

Supaporn Wacharapluesadee, deputy head of the center, said she believes the bullets are likely to test positive for the virus since “the pandemic is limitless.”

“The disease can travel with bats. It could go anywhere, ‘she said.
