“This one-party approach to this legislation is the same approach that delayed the passage of the CARES Act and subsequent provisional emergency relief legislation, failed in police reform, and will not work this time either,” Schumer wrote, referring to the package. $ 2.2 trillion coronavirus relief that Congress approved in March after an initial partisan confrontation.

Schumer opposes a proposed five-year litigation shield that McConnell wants to include in the next aid package that would limit the liability of companies, schools and churches related to coronavirus infections.

“From what we understand from press reports, Leader McConnell’s bill will prioritize corporate special interests over street workers and major businesses, and will not adequately address the growing spread of the Coronavirus,” Schumer wrote to his colleagues.

He cautioned that the liability provision “would avoid the laws of all 50 states and grant legal immunity to negligent corporations, nursing homes and others who do not take reasonable steps to prevent the spread of the virus.”

The Democratic leader also criticized the Republican Party’s emerging coronavirus relief package for failing to extend unemployment benefits or rent assistance funding or provide risk payment for essential workers. He also noted the need for more investment in “communities of color that are being devastated by the virus.”

“Democrats will have to fight hard for these important provisions,” Schumer wrote.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that the administration is trying to block new funding for testing, tracking and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the new aid law.

Schumer urged his colleagues to remain unified against the Republican bill until President Trump and McConnell agree on a variety of Democratic priorities, many of which were included in the $ 3 trillion HEROES Act, which the House passed in May.

“We will stay together again if necessary,” Schumer wrote. “Our fellow Democrats in the House are ready to work and we know that a bipartisan and bicameral process will result in a much better law for the American people.”

Schumer has previously asked for nearly $ 1 trillion in financial aid for state and local governments, which many Republicans oppose.
