Speaking to a national audience as part of the Virtual Democratic National Convention, Schumer promised that if Democrats take the floor, they will be “united,” despite a spectrum of views within the caucus.

“If we will win this battle for the soul of our nation, Joe [Biden] can not do it alone. Democrats need to take back the Senate. We will remain united … and with our unity we will bring bold and dramatic change to our country, “said Schumer.

Schumer offered a to-do list of areas where Democrats would act, including health care, climate change, combating systemic racism and the Supreme Court’s ‘recovery’.

“With President Biden, Vice President [Kamala] Harris and a majority of the Democratic Senate, we will make health care affordable for all; we will hurt the inequality of income and wealth that America irreversible too long has plagued; and we will be strong, decisive action to take to combat climate change and to save the planet, “he said.

Schumer also tipped his hand to the ongoing global health pandemic, arguing that Democrats would “defeat” the coronavirus, which has killed more than 171,000 people in the U.S., according to The New York Times. And he said they would “save the post office”, which has grown concerned with email errors that it is not ready to handle in November a potential influx of post-in votes.

“And, appointed by the lady behind us, we will reform our immigration system so that immigrants longing to breathe free will will eventually become American citizens,” Schumer said, referring to the Statue of Liberty in the background.

Republicans currently have a 53-47 majority in the Senate, but political handicappers believe Democrats have grown momentum to gain control of the House for the first time since 2014.

Democrats need a net pickup of three seats and the White House to conquer the First Chamber, which could allow the vice president to break the 50-50 tie. They need a net gain of four seats to have an immediate majority.

Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Who won a special election in 2017, is widely considered vulnerable, complicating her path back to the majority. But Republicans are playing defense in a growing number of states, including Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Montana and North Carolina, where GOP senators are on the ballot.

During his conventional speech, Schumer dismissed the fight for control of both the House of Representatives and the White House as a “battle for the soul of our nation” and claimed that Trump had “turned off” what the country stands for.

“He was hiding in a bunker when Americans were torn to pieces and defeated; Millions are unemployed. One hundred and seventy thousand Americans have died from COVID. Progressives have for years advocated for Democrats to nix the higher threshold if they win the majority, and the idea has recently been caught with a larger swath of the cow.

Democrats would need a majority to call for the “nuclear option” and lower the filibuster for legislation to a simple majority – similar to what Democrats did for most nominations in 2013 and what Republicans did for Supreme Court suffrage in 2017.

It is unclear if Democrats would have the votes to ignore the legislative filibuster, although they will be under tremendous pressure from outside to do so. Both sen. Schumer, during a press conference this year, did not rule out getting away with the filibuster with 60 votes, but said the party’s first priority was to win back the majority.

“Job number one is for us to get the majority. “We take nothing for granted, but it looks better and better,” he told reporters. “Once we have the majority, we will discuss it in our caucus. Nothing is off the table.”
