A school in Georgia has reported several cases of coronavirus following a viral photo showing a hall full of students when classes were returned last week, while a separate school district reported 100 suspected cases among students and staff prior to its online-only start date later this month.
GEORGIA SCHOOL OPENINGS: ELEMENTARY STUDENT TESTS POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS, STUDENT CROWDS FREE QUESTIONS
In Paulding County, North Paulding High School Principal Gabe Carmona warned parents that at least six students and three staff members who were physically at school last week have tested positive for COVID-19, FOX5 Atlanta reported.
Photos of students walking through tight packs circulated online, asking questions about how they could approach the return trip to classrooms.
Meanwhile, Cobb County Schools said it will continue with only online classes after the Georgia Department of Health alerted it to over 100 potential cases, WSB-TV reported.
Those who test positive will be asked to support 10 days in quarantine, and the state will follow contact procedures. The district has not released any information on any case to protect the privacy of the individual.
Cobb County schools had previously announced that all 113,000 students a year will learn to start practically when school begins Aug. 17. The decision was met with backlash from parents who protested to demand a personal learning opportunity.
The district has outlined a staggered return to classrooms, where elementary students will be seen returning in Phase 1, followed by high school students in Phase 2 and high school students for Phase 3.
Paulding County has 1,651 confirmed coronavirus cases and 22 deaths. Cobb County has seen 13,336 confirmed cases and 318 deaths.
