American Express has just launched a phenomenal new offering that can save you money when shopping at small businesses in the coming weeks. Small businesses might certainly need help right now, so I love the concept of this.

With this new Amex Shop Small promotion:
- Save $ 5 when you make a purchase of $ 10 +
- Use this promotion up to 10 times, for a total of $ 50 in savings
- Enroll before July 26, 2020, through the Amex Deals tab on your online Amex profile
- Make purchases until September 20, 2020
- Purchases at US business locations on the Amex Shop Small map or online directory qualify
- Each cardholder is limited to enrolling a card for this offer, so think carefully about which card you want to enroll (ideally one that offers bonus points in the category you plan to spend on)
How do you access this offer?
This promotion is offered through the Amex Offers program. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings and bonus offers. In many cases, the offers can be huge and more than offset the annual fee for a card.
In this case, it appears that at least all credit cards and personal charges are eligible for the offer. To view Amex offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page for any American Express card where you will see all the offers for which you are eligible. This should appear as the first offer.
Bottom line
It’s great to see Amex offering $ 5 back for every $ 10 + small business purchase, up to 10 times. Small businesses need support right now, and this is a great initiative to encourage that.
In the past, Amex would have “Small Business Saturday,” where cardholders could obtain statement credits for small business purchases once a year (the Saturday after Thanksgiving). While Amex has continued marketing around this, in recent years they have not offered cardholders any form of credit on their account statements.
