On Tuesday Today Show Anchor, 48, responded to a social media user who said her natural hair was “distracting” during a recent broadcast, and admitted that the new coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) forced her to take matters up on your own hands.
“@SavannahGuthrie Cmon. At what you get paid, can’t you afford a stylist? I love the natural sloppy look, but it’s a distraction on the @NBCNews national news,” the person wrote on Twitter.
Guthrie replied, “We all got our hair and makeup done during the pandemic. And it shows!”

Fans quickly came to Guthrie’s defense, thanking the newscaster for his hard work and home broadcasts amid the global health crisis.
“You are a role model for many of us with or without your hair and makeup equipment. Thank you for your hard work. I enjoyed tonight’s newscast,” said one person.
A second added: “Female journalists and anchors do their best to look good and it never seems to be enough 🤷🏻♀️. It is not easy no matter what the size of the salary. Savannah works hard and looks great.”
The social media user who sparked the conversation later apologized for criticizing Guthrie’s appearance and tweeted, “I didn’t mean to be bad. I worked on television for 32 years. I was surprised that makeup artists let hair slide nationwide tv for two days. You look great. It’s the hair that needs a little love. We love you in Puerto Rico! #mujeresalpoder “
In April, the NBC presenter spoke to PEOPLE about trying to maintain her normal morning routine while locked up during the pandemic, despite the fact that she “wears baggy pants and not shoes” around the house like the rest of us.
Guthrie said she already knew how to do her own glamor after years of working on low-key news jobs, but joked that she is “kind of stuck in the ’80s and’ 90s” when it comes to hair and makeup trends.
“I just put it on and hope for the best and I’m not that good at combing and putting on makeup,” she added. “But I’m just trying to do the best I can.”
