Dover, Dale. – Transgender activist Sarah M. Cabrid won the Democratic State Senate primary in Delaware on Tuesday and is set to make history as the first transgender person elected to the state general assembly and the first transgender state senator in the United States.
McBride, who was tied to the White House during President Barack Obama’s administration, made history at the 2016 Democratic National Convention by becoming the first transgender person to speak at the party’s grand convention. He later served as the National Press Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign.
McBride defeated Joseph McColl on Tuesday to advance to the November general election. The Senate district in the argument covers the area from North Wilmington to the Pennsylvania border and has been held by Democrat Harris McDowell since 1976.
Democrats outnumber Republicans in the district – and McBride is a huge favorite against Republicans Steve and Washington Washington in November.
If elected, McBride will join a handful of other transgender legislators across the country but will be the first transgender state senator.
“I’m bringing my confidence to this competition,” Cabrid told the Associated Press in an interview before Tuesday’s primary. “My identity is a part of who I am, but it’s only a part of it.”
“I will judge on the basis of my identity,” McBride added. “I will form an assembly based on my values and the needs of my constituents.”
McBride’s campaign has attracted interest from more than 250,000 donations from across the country and ations, as well as funding for candidates for statewide office fees in Delaware.
McBride’s priorities include paid family and medical leave for all workers, cost reductions and increased competition in the health care industry and strengthening public schools.
After serving as Student Body President at American University, M. B. Cabrid began his career in politics in 2004 as a volunteer for Matt Dane during the Attorney General’s successful campaign. Both Dan and M. Cabrid’s father worked for a law firm in Wilmington, known for its close ties to the Democratic Party.
McBride then became the former governor. Jack Markel and former state attorney general Bau Biden worked on the campaigns.
“Next year, as the first transgender state senator in our nation, Sarah will show that any child can achieve their dream, regardless of their ethnic identity or sexual orientation.”
